A Peek Into my Journal – July 7, 2020
I went to a June wedding for a friend’s daughter. The venue, dress and floral arrangements were elegant. The reception, a grand party! The cake a work of art!
We laughed, danced and ate good food! It was a union of two Christians that God will use to represent His Son and bride.
We sang a hymn.
The preacher preached.
The couple understood the purpose of this day. They grasped the magnitude of the decision they were making. They meant the words they repeated in front of God and everybody.
This wedding was a covenant ceremony.
I attended another wedding. The venue, dress and floral arrangements were elegant. The reception, a grand party! The cake a work of art!
We laughed, danced and ate good food!
The difference?
The couple didn’t understand the purpose of this day. They did not grasp the magnitude of the decision they were making. They meant the words they repeated in front of God and everybody – in that moment with no real weight upon their shoulders that it would be forever.
This wedding was a social event.
I wish I could say I’ve been to more covenant ceremonies that social events, but that’s just not the case today.
When did we trade sensibility for sense?
Have we watered down everything in our society including the basic foundation of family? A wedding is about promising to love, honor and cherish to a God who holds you to your word.
The disciples, listening to Jesus, reasoned it might be better not to marry at all if one wasn’t fully committed to keeping this covenant for better and for the worse when, not if, it comes. (Matthew 19)
Think carefully. Be sure you are ready to awe and revere the One you are in covenant with. Be sure your wedding will be a covenant ceremony and not merely a social event.
