Yesterday, my son studied about volcanos in his Science curriculum. So, of course, we had to resurrect the old baking soda volcano idea (for the millionth time-it’s a favorite:)
We made a very simple version using a small paper cup (like those tiny bathroom cups) and tin foil.
Here’s how:
- Secure the bottom of the paper cup to the middle of a plate using tape.
- Place a square of tin foil over the cut and form it around to look like a volcano.
- Use a pencil to poke a hole in the foil and push it down into the top of the cup. Secure with tape to the cup, otherwise the lava just oozes under to tin foil instead of out over the top.
- Fill the cup halfway with baking soda.
- Add a few drops of food coloring to the soda. We used a toothpick to stir.
- Fill a 2TBS medicine cup with vinegar and when ready, pour in!
(The kids decided to add a chess pawn piece with a face drawn on for dramatic effect! They got a big kick out of watching the “hot lava” ooze out on him!! 🙂
