Here’s the Sunday School lesson we did last week at church. Check back tomorrow and I will post the lesson we will do this Sunday.
(Note: Our children meet in a large group for a time of worship through singing and then for a Bible story. We then go to our rooms for further reinforcement of the story.)
For our large group meeting time, we played the game, “Let’s Make a Decision.” It was played like “Let’s Make a Deal.” A child was given a bag and he must decide to keep what was in the box or choose box #1, #2, or #3. Some of the gifts were cool, but some were silly like cat food. We let the child see what he could have gotten. We talked about how the disciples had a decision to make…whether to follow Jesus or not. The Bible says that they immediately followed him. Do we make good choices to follow Jesus each day?
Theme: Jesus Chose His Disciples
Prayer: Pray before you begin the lesson. (this gets the kids settled and focused)
Find it: Mark 1:16-20, (have everyone find this in their own Bible)
Story Starter:
Have volunteers tell about times they have gone fishing maybe with dad or grandpa.
Bible Story:
Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee when he saw Simon and his brother Andrew, who were fishermen, casting a net into the lake. Jesus said, “Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” At once they left their nets and followed him. When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.
- Notice that the disciples in our story followed Jesus at once…without delay. They chose to follow Him without hesitation. Think about your life. Do you make good choices to follow Jesus each day? Discuss.
When Jesus talked about making the disciples “fishers of men” he meant that they would be trying to reach people for Jesus. Why would Jesus call them away from fishing for fish to fish for people? (because people are more important) Jesus didn’t want anyone to die without knowing Him so He called the disciples to help Him reach other people.
Jesus went on to choose 8 more disciples. The other disciples’ names were: Philip, Nathaniel (known as Bartholomew), Matthew, Thomas, James (son of Alphaeus), Simon (the Zealot), Judas (son of James) and Judas Iscariot. [See last page for a description of each disciple.]
Memory Verse:
Matthew 4:19, “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.”

I created my own fish with the words of the verse on them.
Activity:
Make a water bottle fish by gluing tissue paper pieces onto the outside of the bottle. Attach paper eyes and fins (provided). String the memory verse card onto the yarn “hook” before the children take them home.

Directions:
Line pretzels on a baking sheet. Top each with a Hershey’s Kiss. Allow the chocolate to melt slightly in a 200 degree oven. Remove and top with goldfish cracker. Allow to cool. Store in airtight container.
