Family Devotion – The Bible is from God

Posted on January 9, 2012 by kathyahutto

Each Sunday, our church makes available a Family Devotion to be picked up and completed during the coming week.  The Family Devotion is usually related to the sermon series.  For the month of January, the sermon series is all about the Bible:  it’s History (God breathed); it’s Authority; and it’s Sufficiency.  I am on the team that creates these.  I have pasted the Family Devotion Guide for this week below.:

Family Devotion Guide

January 8th

Theme:  The Bible is from God

Family Memory Verse:  2 Timothy 3:16

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.

Discussion Starter:

Ask each family member to tell what his/her favorite movie is.  Is it true?  Where do movie writers get their ideas?  Have each family member tell what his/her favorite Bible story is.  Is it true?  Who wrote the  Bible?  Explain that men wrote what God told them to write.

Discussion:

The Bible was written over many centuries by about 40 different writers.  However, we know for certain that every part of it was inspired by God.  The messages it contains are coherent and consistent.  There is unity in what it contains; it never contradicts itself; and there are even scientific accuracies.

The Holy Spirit also helps us to know it is true.  Many people look for “proof.” Why do you think it is so hard for them to believe that the Bible is true?  Read 1 Corinthians 2:14.

Like a flashlight, the Bible provides clarity in every area where it shines its light.  It tells the truth about God, the truth about humanity and the truth about our redemption in Jesus Christ. Read Psalm 119:105

Activity this week:

After sunset, turn on a radio and set it to a barely audible volume.  Lead your children to another area of the house and turn on a flashlight and turn off all the lights.  Next, ask your children to listen carefully for the low radio, and have them use the flashlight as you walk through the house to find the noise.

The flashlight helped you to see where you were going.  Ask: “What would have happened if you didn’t have the flashlight?”  (trip, bump into things, get lost, afraid…)  Explain that God’s Word is true and it guides us and lights our path much like the flashlight did when we navigated through the house.

 Prayer:

Pray together asking God to help you grow closer to Him as you read His word each day.

Note:  Many of the ideas for this week’s devotion came from Thriving Family by Focus on the Family.
